CNN Student News
Each morning, I show CNN Student News. This is a ten-minute, commercial-free, daily news program designed for students. It is produced by educators and journalists specifically for a student audience. Some of the information that is presented is for a more sophisticated audience (middle or high school students) but I have found that even when my students don't understand everything that is presented, the exposure to the information remains invaluable.
Students love watching the news each day and feeling connected to the world around them. It is not only a great way to expose students to current events but also to allow them learn about different opinions and perspectives and to gain confidence in sharing their own. I encourage families to ask their children about what their seeing on the news and discuss your own families views on events and issues that unfold throughout the year. Many of my students from the past tell me that watching the news each day was one of their very favorite memories of our year together!
If you are interested in watching CNN Student News each day yourself, you have two different options. You can sign up to have a link to the program e-mailed to you each day, or you can simply go on the CNN Student News website Monday through Friday and hit the play button. Be sure to catch the excessive number of puns at the end of each show. They are outstanding!
