English Language Arts
This year the Ashland School District invested in a new language arts curriculum. National Geographic's Reach for Reading was chosen, after considering several other well regarded programs.
The teaching staff at Walker was impressed with the quality of the materials and in particular with the rich texts that complement the anthology and magazines.
In the 4th grade, the program is designed around eight Big Questions:
Students and parents can access Reach for Reading materials on the Reach for Reading website. I encourage you to explore this program, I think that you will be as excited about it as I am. Instructions for accessing the site were sent home, including each student's user name and password. Please contact me if your child is having trouble accessing the site.

- How do we relate to nature?
- When do harmless things become harmful?
- Why do we seek treasure?
- What does it take to explore space?
- What is worth protecting?
